The first book I read on Google AdWords raved about this concept called "split testing". It is an advertising technique used for years by "old school" (non-Internet) marketers where one control point of a campaign is changed and the results are measured. For example, in a direct mailing, the sales copy would be different on one letter. The letter that gets the most response wins.
