Over Deliver to Make More Money with your Membership site

Tuesday, November 24th 2009 @ 2:49 PM (not yet rated)    post viewed 1228 times

I am a huge fan of the "Under Promise - Over Deliver" model of online marketing simply because so few online businesses actually offer it.

Let's discuss how you can use this to model to enhance your membership site and become more financially successful:

If you can provide benefits to membership that are clearly worth more than the cost of the subscription you will easily increase your sign up rate. One of the best ways to over deliver is to provide digital content for free since it does not cost you anything to distribute, can be automated with the sign up process and can be done in nearly every form of multimedia that will appeal to different people. Here are a few examples:

  • ebook
  • Video Course
  • Premium Report
  • Software application
  • Templates
  • Resources
  • Audio Lesson
  • Video Lesson
  • A/V Presentation

Be certain that you clearly detail the value and benefits of the free content and then make sure you make it top quality. Your new member should feel that what they just received as a free product is nearly worth the subscription alone and that if this is what you give away than what else could be reserved inside the site for a paying member?

The important thing to remember is not to skimp here...Don't give away products that you know are not among your best stuff. Transparency will not only provide you with loyalty and the trust factor but will also make it easier for you to create your member benefits page or sales letter explaining what they get when they join and WHY they really need to sign up.

If you do not have your own material to give away, consider buying physical products that you will send to people when they sign up. Stay away from affiliate items at this point as you want to be clear that the free items they receive is unique to your site--otherwise you water down the tm0E7-underpromise_overdeliver_tom_peters_mugp1685538560908374852otmb_400.jpgmessage and are no longer over delivering.

Finally, to stay true to the "Under Promise" part of this model, provide additional products/services that you don't advertise for joining and "WOW" them with the value they end up receiving. This small, subtle "bonus" of receiving more than they expected or were promised means a lot to people and has a strong impact on the first impression you make with your subscribers.

The very best "bricks and mortar" businesses learned this lesson and we can do the same for our successful online businesses.

Give them MORE and you will get more members.

You have my 100% Money Back Guarantee on that. Wink

I had a long drawn out post saying you have to over deliver... but that's a given.

Even when you give stuff away for free - have to mega over deliver there as well.

I'll be getting with you guys soon.

Hey Andrew,

Yeah, and this post probably was a tad long too...Still, it seems the point needs to be further explained and promoted as there are so few sites out there doing this. I totally agree with you that the free sites also need to provide quality content and mega over deliver.

As more people continue to use the internet to shop, seek info and connect, there will be an even stronger need to differentiate and stand apart from the crowd. Over delivering is a great tool to do just that.

Great tip.

Most marketers work the other way around, so if you offer value when members are not expecting and over deliver, you automatically push your offering to the top 5%, based on trust.

Its the same offline. You keep going back to the shop where the owner goes that extra mile.
